Xmas Lights

Holiday lights have always been a tradition to most households. However it could be a source of accidents and untoward incidents like home fires and strangulation.

Safe installation is important to ensure that the safety of every home occupant will not be threatened.

In its official website, DIYNetwork.com shared the advice of their resident electrician on ensuring safe holiday light installation, and it all begins with using safe tools and equipment like the ladder. American Lighting Association

"Use a good ladder when installing your lights. Secure them with insulated holders (never use tacks or nails). Don't install your lights on trees that come in contact with power lines. Before installing your Christmas lights, plug them in to make sure all of your bulbs are working. Make sure to turn your lights off when you leave or go to bed at night."

True Value also published a comprehensive guide on installing Christmas lights safely. It highlighted both the safety measures that should be observed when using Christmas lights in and out of the home. Master Electrician

"Make sure you stay clear of power lines when you install holiday lights. If connecting to an inside power source, keep the window or door open slightly so the cord does not get crushed. Inside, when adding lights to your Christmas tree, for example, work from the inside, close to the tree trunk out towards the tips of the branches. When you reach the tip of a branch, wrap your way back toward the trunk."

Popular Mechanics meantime emphasized that careful planning will help in the safe installation of Holiday lights both inside and outside the home.

"Before you start, make a plan. Measure the locations where you will string lights. Most likely this will be along eaves or gutters and around windows. Use this plan to estimate how many strands you'll need and how long they should be. Unfortunately, there are no standard strand lengths, but there are standard-size bulbs and standard distances between bulbs on a strand. Look for C7- or C9-size bulbs spaced 6 to 8 inches apart. A longer distance between bulbs allows for more light to spread across a wider area, creating more picturesque shadows and greater warmth."
